Former slave's headstone with overgrowth of weeds

One of 150 headstones plus 400 graves at this one site

This site is still under development. As it progresses, visitors will be able to explore the process of preserving, documenting, and stabilizing cemeteries.

My future book will deal with the process I followed in preserving once abandoned all African American cemeteries located within southeastern North Carolina.  Two appear to be the largest family and community cemeteries of their type.  Some headstones indicate burials as early as ca.1895.  A third similar cemetery has burials as early as ca.1876.

I am conducting these exclusive and private research projects at my costs, no expense to anyone else.  I am now part of a Not-For-Profit group, home based in Florida.  Although I know I will never receive complete reimbursement for my work hours, manual labor, and research time, the project is well worth the effort.

The heritage, along with extended research projects that has developed, such as the story of one of the oldest all African American Chapels and schools organized just after the War Between the States (American Civil War) has never been officially told.

Located within southeastern North Carolina the Edney Primitive Baptist Chapel was formed ca.1880 and has been continuously active to this date (2009).  The Grandson of the former slave who was originally given the property to form the church and school, ca.1875, is now the chapel's senior Deacon.

Please return to this site to see images, documents and family oral histories dealing with these exciting projects.

I am now "Not-For-Profit" and I hope people understand and recognize the magtitude of work, time, and hours needed to process these various long overdue projects.  Conducting the projects at my own expense has been a challenge but, one that is well worth the strain.  Every dollar received through a modest donation eases my limited budget.

Contact me through this site if you have any questions or concerns.

Thank you
